WHEN ROCK WAS YOUNG…

July 9, 1988, Cheap Trick went to number one on the US singles chart with “The Flame,” the group’s only US No. 1. I saw them in concert with Uriah Heep and they were quite possibly the loudest bands I ever heard!

Also On July 9th in 1983 The Police started an eight-week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘Every Breath You Take’ also No.1 in the UK. Taken from the band’s album Synchronicity, Sting won Song of the Year and The Police won Best Pop Performance for the song at the 1984 Grammy Awards.

Stewart Copeland from The Police was pretty harsh about the song saying “In my humble opinion, this is Sting’s best song with the worst arrangement. I think Sting could have had any other group do this song and it would have been better than our version—except for Andy’s brilliant guitar part. Basically, there’s an utter lack of groove. It’s a totally wasted opportunity for our band. Even though we made gazillions off of it, and it’s the biggest hit we ever had.”
